New Madrid, Missouri                                        www.New-Madrid.MO.US
Nestled on a bend in the Mississippi River and dating to 1789, New Madrid is known worldwide as the epicenter of a series of earthquakes in 1811-12, including North America’s strongest-ever quake, felt from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Today, the little southeast Missouri town of 3,000-plus welcomes visitors attracted by its seismic fame, Civil War history and role as a stop on the infamous Cherokee Trail of Tears. Travelers can learn about the city at the New Madrid Historical Museum, as well as the Higgerson Landing Visitors Center, where they can schedule a tour of the Higgerson School Historic Site, a restored one-room school house located across the street from the Visitors Center. Other popular stops include the 1859 Hunter-Dawson home, spectacular views of the Mississippi River from a large observation deck and scenic river walk, and the River Walk Gallery located in the Hart-Stepp House, the city’s oldest standing home. With its history, river scenery and “Old South” ambiance, New Madrid is an appealing stop in America’s heartland.
